Kate Werning

Organizing + Field

Kate Werning grew into organizing by the resilient leadership of undocumented folks and youth of color with Voces de la Frontera + Youth Empowered in the Struggle, organizing youth-led campaigns to win a Student Bill of Rights in two school districts, push back against the School to Prison Pipeline, and win Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in coordination with the national Dreamer movement.

After years of feeling depleted and stressed, and refusing to believe that organizing is inevitably exhausting, Kate took up a yoga practice that has served to ground and focus her path. She trained as a Hatha yoga teacher and integrates those tools into her organizing to work from the heart, as well as bringing interdependence and social justice into her yoga classes at Third Root Community Health Center. Looking to root into a longer term vision of deep transformative change, Kate worked with Carlos Saavedra to launch the Ayni Institute, Momentum trainings, and Cosecha; and continues to be a Lead Trainer with Momentum, as well as an Advisory Board member of the Milwaukee-based OmTownYogis. She has trained with Oppression in the Soma, Off the Mat Into the World, and the Relational Center.

As the lead on Organizing + Field with CTZNWELL since April 2015, Kate practices the critical connection of personal wellbeing work with a deep commitment to collective liberation through social change each day. www.katewerning.com
